The touching reunion of separated twins after the Second World War
The twin brothers George and Lucian Skrzynecki
Poznanski (69), were separated at birth and have needed almost a lifetime to
meet again. In late August could finally see in person and hug at the airport
in Warsaw (Poland). They kissed with tears in his eyes, both dressed in plaid
shirt.
George's mother and Lucian, Elizabeth, was a
Polish Catholic woman who was sent to a labor camp in Germany during World War
II work. The twins were born in 1946 after being freed his mother in Kassel,
but she was so sick she could not take care of them.
The twins were born in the German city of Kassel. That
began a separation that has taken almost 70 years in remedied. The brothers
were taken to Poland a year of birth, first to Katowice and then Rybnik.
After spending time in an orphanage, they were
adopted by different families. Lucian remained in Poland, where he lived
unaware of the existence of his brother. George discovered at age 18 by a
letter that her birth mother had been searching for years, and he had a
brother. He continued to investigate and discovered that his mother had died in
1952, but failed to locate his brother.
In the 1970s, he emigrated to America, where he
started a family and lost hope of finding his twin. "All my life I wanted
to meet my family. For 70 years I lived with uncertainties," George told
the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire. So the brothers continued their lives until they
were, thanks to the program of the Red Cross Restoring Family Links.
Since then, they have become inseparable. Grateful.
The discovery changed the lives of both. "When we learned the truth, when
George knew I was alive, almost had a heart attack," says Lucian.
"Me too. I could not contain my emotions, it
was a shock." Despite all the years they spent apart, the brothers are
very grateful to have met.
The meeting took place on 24 August. "What
happened in the past, can not change," says George.
"I do not care about winning the lottery. I
just want my brother to me," said Lucian.
